An Ode To Fashion (Plus Some Original Drawings)

Style is the ultimate form of self-expression, the most in-your-face outward representation of who someone is. It’s one of the art forms that we participate with most in our daily lives, constantly analyzing it and making assumptions based on what we see.

Style comes from fashion, an artistic pursuit followed by many talented artists who like to combine visual art with personal character. Much like portraiture, fashion aspires to capture the spirit of its subject using simple lines, colors, and patterns. As culture evolves, so does fashion. While things that are “in style” have arguably been demoted to the role of style preference, true fashion is still drastically affected by changes in society. Wether it be conventional or avant-garde, the pieces that walk the runway can be one of the most shocking manifestations of creativity.

Fashion has evolved from necessity to tradition to art in the years that humans have existed, a fantastic transition unlike that of any other form of creativity. Over the years, rules have been broken, experiments have soared, and simple ideas have become societal staples.

No matter what runway you may be observing, whether on youtube or in person, you can expect to see something new, something surprising. That’s the goal, anyway. It’s incredible that over so many years, designers have continued to produce completely original pieces time after time, never wavering. Names like Alexander McQueen, Coco Chanel, and Dior may come to mind, images of strange-looking dresses and vibrantly colored shirts.

Like architecture, fashion is all around us but we rarely stop to appreciate it. It is truly a meaningful art form that can help us understand ourselves and our relationships to our society.

Below are some of my fashion sketches that I thought I’d share. I created them using Prêt-à-Template, which is a great app where you can use templates and then make them fade away. The free version allows you to use enough tools to create a pretty good product.
