Who doesn’t want a remake of the classic movie Casablanca with a modern soundtrack? Probably most people. But isn’t it fun to imagine? Here’s the songs I would include. As a warning, some important plot points are revealed to describe at what point during the film each song is played.
1. I Dreamt We Spoke Again by Death Cab For Cutie from their album “Thank You For Today”
We see Rick’s cafe for the first time. We survey the customers and Rick as a German officer causes disturbance. Ugarte approaches Rick.
2. Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now from The Smiths’ “Louder Than Bombs”
Ugarte is approached by the police and runs away. Rick refuses to help him. He’s arrested. Fades out as Rick sits down with Major Strasser and his officers.
3. I love you by Billie Eilish from “WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP WHERE DO WE GO?”
Rick sits alone in his Cafe, confused about Ilsa. Fades out when Sam approaches him.
4. The Millionaire Waltz by Queen from “A Day at the Races”
The Paris flashback. Rick and Ilsa are in love.
5. The Scientist by Coldplay from “A Rush Of Blood To The Head”
Plays in sections at the end of the Paris flashback when Rick boards the train and later in real time, when Ilsa has stormed out after she comes to talk to him.
6. Ready To Let Go by Cage the Elephant from “Social Cues”
Just a short section right after Ilsa reveals that she was married to Laszlo before Paris.
7. Mine by The 1975 from “A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships” (otherwise known as the best album ever)
Ilsa and Victor discuss things at their hotel. Laszlo is about to go to the rebellion meeting.
8. You Take My Breath Away by Queen from “A Day At The Races”
Ilsa secretly goes to try to talk Rick into giving them the letters of transit. She admits that she still loves him.
9. Service Road by Better Oblivion Community Center from their self-titled album
Rick convinces Ilsa she has to leave with Laszlo. They get on the plane.
10. Invisible Empire by KT Tunstall from “Crescent Moon”
Closing credits.
I had fun thinking about this and I hope it was interesting to see my ideas. Here’s the link to my playlist on Spotify if you’d like it for whatever reason: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5zdTn3fXboVMiV5hEvV6I9?si=dYjHXzz8Q0OhSaeAv6KEPQ
